SAP IBP Transitioning to Real-Time Integration (RTI) from (SDI) Smart Data Integration

Order based planning aka Response is a SAP IBP product/module which helps you do operational planning. It provides different form of planning runs which are basically Supply Planning and Deployment run. Order based planning is very tightly integrated to ECC/S4 and until end of last year the main mechanism to bring data to OBP Planning area (SAP7) was through SDI (Smart Data Integration), with introduction of RTI (Real time integration) you have a new mechanism (very similar to CIF in APO word) which could bring data almost real time to OBP Flexible Planning Area (SAP7F).

Note – outbound of data from OBP Flexible planning area is still batch oriented like SDI and in future we expect this integration to also become real time.

With this new capability of real time data transfer many of the customers are assessing the effort it would take to move from SDI to RTI. Some customers have approached us to help them estimate this effort, although this post does not aim to cover overall aspects which one needs to take into account to move from SDI to RTI, we have tried to highlight one important aspect which requires significant effort in migration and that is the abap development work which one needs to do in respective ECC/S4 system before they are able to pull data into IBP.

As we know that to bring data to OBP PA using SDI, SAP has provided with extraction tables sometimes also referred as staging or ext tables. These were filled with standard reports/programs which were also available as part of IBP Addon. However, as Master data or Transactional data was not really editable in OBP Planning area (because of tight integration with ECC or S4) any changes to data was done in ERP (ECC or S4) with help of standard BADI’s provided by SAP as part of Add-on.

With RTI being introduced there is some flexibility to maintain/update that data directly in IBP using CI-DS or manually ex – maintenance of additional attributes on Product, Location etc however part of the data would still have to be manipulated/enhanced directly in ECC or S4 and for the same SAP has provided some supporting BADI’s.

Below we have put a simple comparison of corresponding RTI BADI’s which we can use when we plan to migrate from SDI.

Note –

1)    The comparison do not focus on all the BADIs rather focuses on important BADIs which are used the most

2)    There needs to be proper functional/technical assessment before you decide to make use of a corresponding RTI BADI, there is no one to one code migration

I am also sharing some important links which can help you explore more on SDI and RTI.
